In questi due video del canale YouTube TA Outdoors vengono riprese le fasi di costruzione di una casa vichinga, dalla lavorazione del legname alla realizzazione del telaio, fino alle fasi di rifinitura.
L’abitazione è stata realizzata utilizzando legname di cedro e utensili tradizionali come ascia, sega e martello. L’intera abitazione poggia su fondamenta costituite da 10 tronchi di cedro trattati con una tecnica ben poco norrena (la Shou-Sugi Ban, o yakisugi, tecnica giapponese per la conservazione del legno) per evitare la decomposizione del legname.
La semplicità della tecnica giapponese rende del tutto probabile che anche i popoli nordici fossero a conoscenza di questo metodo: si tratta di bruciare la superficie dei tronchi per carbonizzarla e renderla più resistente all’acqua.
Il terzo video si concentra sulla costruzione di un focolare a fossa da posizionare all’interno dell’abitazione. Le pietre del focolare sono state fissate utilizzando l’argilla estratta durante gli scavi; al termine del filmato, la casa vichinga inizia a prendere forma, con un focolare centrale e un telaio eretto.
Nella quinta parte i costruttori si dedicano alla realizzazione del tetto sfruttando i vantaggi offerti da un cavalletto da segatura costruito nel video precedente. Dopo aver realizzato il telaio con tronchi impermeabilizzati, si inizia la lavorazione della corteccia di cedro per ottenere tegole con cui rivestire l’esterno dell’abitazione, lavorazione che prosegue nel sesto video.
Nel settimo video i costruttori si prendono una pausa per trascorrere la notte nel rifugio appena terminato e cucinare un pasto norreno: agnello arrostito sulla fiamma viva e pane fresco cotto in una pentola di ferro battuto.
La costruzione della casa vichinga prosegue con la realizzazione di una staccionata perimetrale, finestre di legno e un comignolo per il tetto.
