Tra tutti i popoli che vivono in Nord America, gli Inuit sono probabilmente i più difficili da comprendere per un invididuo civilizzato. Vivendo in una striscia di terra lunga 5.000 chilometri che va dallo Stretto di Bering alla Groenlandia, i contatti tra Inuit e mondo moderno sono stati praticamente inesistenti fino al termine del XIX secolo.
Contrariamente al resto dei nativi americani, le cui culture e tradizioni sono da secoli oggetto di numerosissime interpretazioni (talvolta errate) da parte dell’opinione pubblica e della scienza, gli Inuit sono rimasti pressoché sconosciuti per la maggior parte della loro storia, anche se nel XX secolo hanno spesso attratto l’attenzione per le loro tradizioni, come la caccia alla foca.
Gli Inuit non vivono soltanto in una delle regioni più difficili e remote del pianeta, ma stanno subendo una distruzione sistematica del loro stile di vita tradizionale, eroso dalla modernità e da concetti del mondo moderno che hanno poco o nulla a che vedere con la sopravvivenza tra i ghiacci.
Anche se il freddo, i cani da slitta e gli igloo sono stati sostituiti da stufe elettriche, motoslitte e prefabbricati, è possibile avere uno scorcio delle antiche tradizioni Inuit grazie alla serie “Le storie di Tuktu“, documentari di 15 minuti filmati nel 1967 dal regista canadese Laurence Hyde.
Hyde ha incontrati gli Inuit Netsilik canadesi quando il loro stile di vita non era stato ancora “corrotto” dalla modernità. I Netsilik erano tradizionalmente cacciatori e pescatori: non avendo piante commestibili nel loro territorio, cibo e materiali di prima necessità provenivano quasi esclusivamente da animali.

Durante i mesi estivi, i Netsilik cacciavano i caribù che vagavano nella tundra, ottenendo carne e pelli indispensabili per la sopravvivenza autunnale e invernale. In inverno, invece, i Netsilik migravano verso il ghiaccio per la caccia alle foche e per la pesca ai salmerini, conservando il surplus alimentare all’interno di blocchi di ghiaccio.
